Way back in 1970 we were a normal family. My brother was 2 years old and in June of that year I was born. Dad worked on a farm while mum looked after the kids, then suddenly dad was taken seriously ill and things would never be the same again. He suffered kidney failure, and had to go on a dialysis machine. We lost our home which was tied to his employment and were put into council accommodation.
Things were tough for my parents, but Kidney Care UK (then, British Kidney Patients Association) gave us vital support and provided equipment which allowed our family to lead something like a normal life, even supporting holidays both at home and abroad. Dad is no longer with us, but by combining his two great passions – cars and music – we had the opportunity to give something back. And that’s how Rocky’s Road was born (‘Rocky’ was dads nickname) and this is why Kidney Care UK was the charity supported by this first event.
